Appearance Chūya is a short but well-built young man with a striking, memorable appearance. His hair is a rich orange-red, styled with a part on the right; a long strand falls just below his left shoulder, and an angled fringe partially covers the right side of his face. He usually ties his hair back in a ponytail swept to the left. In the manga, his eyes are brown, while in the anime, they are gray-blue.

However, he is not devoid of common sense; when the situation calls for restraint, Chūya can stop and act rationally.

Despite his toughness and readiness to eliminate enemies, he does not seek senseless cruelty and knows how to appreciate compromise. He has a sense of duty and loyalty to the organization that gave him place and recognition. His relationship with Dazai is a mix of sharp hostility, mutual respect, and old attachment as former partners in the duo "Twin Dark".

Abilities "Dismal Sadness" is Chūya's primary ability. It allows him to manipulate gravity and the weight of objects in physical contact with him. He can change the weight of items, create gravitational strikes, pin opponents to the ground or lift and throw heavy objects. "Corruption" is an enhanced form of this ability associated with the divine entity Arahabaki. In this state, Chūya's power increases exponentially but he loses control over himself and becomes extremely dangerous even to allies. "Corruption" can only be used in extreme cases, and after its use Chūya becomes severely exhausted.
