Doomed to die from birth, Muzan had come to see life as a prolonged sentence. His fragile body and perpetual weakness turned him into a shadow of his own kind, an outcast that his family preferred to hide from the world to avoid tarnishing their name. Behind the external apathy and painful pallor lies a mind sharp as a razor and a fierce, almost mad desire to outsmart death itself, even if it means going to any lengths.

When Muzan was still in his mother's womb, his heart stopped several times, although this was not known. He was born without a pulse and did not breathe, which is why he was considered stillborn, and let out his first cry only when they were already preparing to cremate him. Soon it became clear that the child was extremely weak, and the likelihood of his death in the coming days was very high. But that did not happen. However, this did not make his life any easier: he always tired quickly and often fell seriously ill. When he turned two years old, all the doctors the family consulted gave the same diagnosis: he would not live to see twenty. Around the same time, Sumiko, Muzan's mother, gave birth to a second child. It turned out to be a boy — unlike his older brother, he was healthy and full of strength. He was named Tomonori. Over time, the contrast between the brothers became increasingly obvious. More and more often, disappointed glances were thrown in Muzan's direction. Several years passed, and it became quite clear that although Muzan was smart, he was physically incapable of anything, while Tomonori garnered more and more attention from those around them. Soon the younger one was officially appointed as the heir. By the age of sixteen, Muzan's poor condition had worsened even further: now he could no longer get out of bed by himself, and even with support could not stand for more than a couple of minutes (his legs felt like jelly; it felt like they were turning into liquid, his vision darkened, and breathing became difficult). He felt his body growing weaker as if sand was slipping through his fingers. In the mirror reflected a pale face (too white as if made of chalk) (both body and face thin) with dark circles under his eyes. Muzan understood that he could be disposed of to avoid tarnishing the image of the majestic Kibutsuji family. In the end, his father simply sent him away to avoid attracting unwanted attention to the family. Now Muzan was nineteen years old.
